BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF LAW ON AMENDMENTS TO THE LAW ON THE LEGAL STATUS OF FOREIGN NATIONALS

The State Great Hural (Parliament) approved the Law on Amendments to the Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals and the accompanying draft laws on December 31, 2020.
An amendment to the Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals included improvements to Mongolia's visa regulations, such as the issuance of visas at border crossings, the issuance of electronic visas, the operation of visa centers, the extension of visas, and the revocation of certain visas. In addition, the concept of issuing visas only by printed documents has been changed, and new regulations have been introduced to issue visas in electronic and printed sheet in line with international trends, and to improve the registration and control of foreign nationals. For example, an amendment to the law states that foreign nationals may be issued a single-entry visa for a period of up to 30 days at the international border checkpoint without the visa permit. The list of countries that can issue “tourist” visas at the international border checkpoint without a visa permit and the procedure for issuing visas shall be regulated by the procedures. Also, if foreign nationals have not determined the purpose of his/her visit to Mongolia or the purpose of entry, or if he/she has a visa that does not meet the purpose to visit, foreign nationals not be entry to Mongolia. Foreign nationals shall submit his/her grant for a residence permit in Mongolia for private purposes to the State administrative body in charge of foreign nationals within 21 days from the date of entering the country.
Law on Amendments to the Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals shall come into force on June 1, 2021.
